About the performance

In her autobiographical novel Me, Scared?, the poet, writer and journalist Maruša Krese touched on the continuously emotive and traumatic topic of World War II on Slovenian soil. In her novel, the story of her family begins in 1941 as an intimate story of a young couple of partisan fighters, the author’s mother and father, who suddenly find themselves in the crux of the war storms deep in the Kočevje region forests, where the fight for victory is fought and life-or-death decisions are made, but above all, it is the setting of the cruel and merciless fight for survival that leaves no room for fear, although, of course, somewhere deep inside fear nevertheless exists.

Through the eyes of her parents, who had to grow up fast, the author sketches all the ethical and ideological dilemmas that He and She face in the course of their partisan life, dilemmas that, of course, carry over to the post-war time when the new authority and the role of an individual are established in an ideological system that relegates family to second place. And then, in 1952, during the time of the reconstruction of the homeland, the parents’ voices are joined by the voice of the author – the voice of their daughter Maruša. Her strongly personal and often critical view of the war and the post-war period highlights the questions that continue to divide Slovenians to this day, and with which the author wishes to solve her intimate and ideological dilemmas, her "conflict" with her parents as well as her foreignness and her escape from Slovenia into the world.

The performance is 105 minutes long.
